Good posture isn’t just about looking confident; it’s essential for structural health. Poor posture leads to muscle imbalances, back pain, and strain. Chronic slouching (often from screen time) can cause headaches, reduce neck flexibility, and even impact blood flow. When we are constantly looking at our computer monitor or phone, our eyes draw us closer to what we are looking at. This puts your head in front of your shoulders creating lots of upper back and neck tension.
Posture Tips
• Workstation Adjustments: Your computer screen should be at eye level to avoid bending your neck. Sit with your back against the chair to avoid slouching.
• Mindful Standing: Keep your weight balanced evenly over your feet, knees slightly relaxed, and ears directly over shoulders.
• Strong Core: Strengthen your abdominal and back muscles to support your spine. Exercises like planks and bridge exercises are effective.
• Move Regularly: Avoid staying in one position for more than an hour. Get up, stretch, or walk around to counteract sitting.
• Check Your Sleep: Use a mattress that supports the natural curve of your spine. Avoid sleeping on your stomach, which can cause excessive neck twisting.
Posture Exercises to Do Anywhere
1. Standing Upright Check: Imagine a string pulling your head toward the ceiling, like a puppet on a string.
2. Shoulder Blade Squeezes: Gently pinch your shoulder blades together to reverse “hunching”. Feel the muscle contraction between your shoulder blades and your chest open up.
3. Core Activations: While sitting, engage your abdominal muscles for short intervals. This can be done by pulling your belly button towards your back bone like putting on a support belt.
